Sold-Out Seminars and Packed Trade Show at the 2023 GCSAA Conference

The 2023 GCSAA conference was one for the books. With conference and trade show attendance up 69% over the 2022 San Diego event, this year’s event in Orlando was a success. To add to the excitement, the total in-person attendance of 11,000 was comparable to the last pre-pandemic event in 2020 that welcomed 11,700 attendees. Seminars at the conference exceeded last year’s attendance by 70%. There were 6,300 seats filled at seminars which is the highest number since 2008. The trade show had nearly 450 exhibitors, covering nearly 250,000 square feet of exhibit space.

Sold-Out Seminar

Exacto RDI Director, Glen Obear co-led an educational seminar with Dr. Beth Guertal during the conference. If you missed out, here’s Glen’s recap of the sold-out seminar.

Glen Obear, Exacto RDI Director

“Dr. Beth Guertal and I discussed many topics over a four-hour seminar titled “Facts, Myths, and Legends: Soil and Water Edition.” We covered turfgrass nutrition (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, secondary macronutrients, and micronutrients), soil testing, soil salinity and sodicity, soil layering, and some gray areas where product labeling might make a product’s true function somewhat confusing. A common thread across all of these topics is that there is a basic principle rooted in good science at the beginning of the idea. From that basic starting point, some topics have a large body of research that we come to accept as fact and eventually legend in turfgrass management. However, other times the applied research is lacking and that good initial concept is applied incorrectly or exaggerated, resulting in ineffective and inefficient practices and product applications. What is the solution? The best recommendations and solutions will come from research that is able to be translated into actionable results for superintendents. Golf course superintendents are inquisitive and driven to grow and learn from the latest research – that was certainly the case at the GCSAA seminar, where there was excellent engagement and discussion throughout the session. As an industry, we need to work together and fund more research to validate these ideas! That research needs to be supported at universities, within industry R&D groups, and on golf courses where superintendents ultimately put those results into practice. If we all work together, we have an opportunity as an industry to lead the way when it comes to responsible management of soil, water, and green spaces across the world.”

Keys to Success for Insecticide & Fungicide Applications in 2024

Crop dusters and spray drones are taking flight, but is what’s in the tank enough to take on this year’s disease pressure? A strong fungicide or insecticide application can make or break a successful cropping season, but the optimum tank mix is incomplete without the right adjuvants.
